The model

Between a full-time hire and a BigLaw invoice, there was nothing. Now there is.

Most growing companies face two bad options for serious legal work: hire a general counsel for $350K+ all-in before you need one full-time, or send everything to an hourly firm and brace for the bill. Subscription GC is the third path.

Option A — Full-time GC

A hire you can't yet justify

Six-figure salary, benefits, equity, and ramp time — a fixed cost that doesn't flex with a workload that's still uneven. Powerful once you're big enough. Premature before then.

Option B — Hourly firm

Surprise invoices, misaligned incentives

Excellent work, unpredictable cost. Every call, email, and revision is metered, and the firm has no reason to be efficient. Budgeting becomes guesswork.

The subscription model

Direct access to a strategic, proven, 20+ year GC for a flat monthly rate, a per-document fee, or a custom fee tied to a particular outcome — payment options tied to your timing, need, and budget, leveraging AI-accelerated drafting and review, coupled with experienced legal sign-off. In-house judgment that scales up or down with your business, incented and paid by outcome, not hours.

04

Scoped and flexible

Month-to-month. Scale up as you raise and grow, or down when things are quiet. No pyramid, no office overhead in the rate.

About

A working general counsel — not a referral network.

Subscription GC was built on a simple premise: the companies that most need seasoned in-house judgment are often the ones least able to afford it full-time. After 20+ years as in-house counsel, I offer that judgment directly — on a subscription instead of a salary.

As an AI-native fractional general counsel, I deliver in-house quality legal work at flat rates often well below BigLaw's hourly billing rates, with predictable pricing, AI-accelerated turnaround, and the flexibility to scale up or down. My work spans corporate governance, commercial contracting, employment, IP, compliance, and coordination and management of outside counsel. I'm licensed in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and New York and serve clients nationwide, and will help you locate local counsel where a matter calls for litigation or the law of another jurisdiction.

You work with the same trusted lawyer every month — someone who learns your business, earns your trust, holds the context, and answers the phone.

The alternative legal services market has grown to roughly $28B+ globally and is the fastest-growing segment of legal services (Thomson Reuters). CEO's, CFO's and Boards are increasingly leveraging AI-enabled, fractional GC's given their value and ability to scale with the business.

Questions

Details worth knowing.

Why a subscription instead of hourly billing?
Hourly billing rewards inefficiency and makes your legal spend impossible to budget. A flat monthly fee aligns incentives — the goal becomes solving your problem well and quickly, not accumulating time entries. You always know exactly what next month costs.
What counts as a "legal project"?
A discrete piece of work — a contract, a demand or engagement letter, a research memo, or an entity registration. Your Fractional GC plan includes a defined set of projects each month; a one-off need can be handled as a single $1,500 document, and heavier or specialized work as a custom engagement.
Which states can you practice in?
I'm licensed in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and New York, and I serve clients nationwide — much of a general counsel's work (commercial contracts, corporate matters, federal law, and matters where the governing law is chosen by contract) isn't tied to where your company sits. Where a matter turns on the law of a state where I'm not admitted, I associate local counsel. Matters outside scope — such as litigation appearances, securities offerings, or patent prosecution — are handled through a separate written engagement or specialist outside counsel.
How does billing work?
The monthly fee is invoiced in advance and earned through each monthly period. Subscription GC does not typically accept nor hold client funds in trust — no retainers or escrow. Payment is handled securely, and the engagement runs month-to-month; you can cancel any time with written notice.
Can I scale up or down as my company grows?
Yes. Engagements are month-to-month and designed to scale with you — start with a single document, move up to a Fractional GC subscription as your contracting volume, headcount, and governance needs grow, or step up to a Custom engagement for heavier or specialized needs. You can dial back during quieter periods, and your first document credits toward month one if you subscribe within 30 days.
